‘This doesn’t happen to us’: Family’s horror after Sydney day care abuser unmasked

Walking to his young son’s bedroom to check his clothes against footage of a day care worker’s abuse, Tom* had one thought: “This doesn’t happen to us.”

“It’s almost overwhelmingly upsetting to the point when you almost block it out of your mind,” Tom said.

“There was a strong desire to believe that whatever happened, it was not a big deal.”

Tom shared his story with the Herald as police revealed how they caught his child’s abuser, Sydney day care worker David William James. The 27-year-old was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years’ prison with a non-parole period of seven years for sexual offences relating to nine children.

‘Egregious’ childcare worker jailed for filming kids

A childcare worker who captured explicit images of children younger than 10 will remain in prison until at least 2031.

David William James was sentenced at Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to 11 charges related to the production and possession of child abuse material.

The 28-year-old committed the crimes against children as young as five years old at six out-of-school centres across Sydney between April 2021 and May 2024.

In a lengthy sentencing, Judge Guy Newton said the offending was disturbing and depraved.

“In each case he was the child’s carer … the offender abused both a position of trust and authority,” he told the court.

David William James has been sentenced to 12 years' jail for creating and possessing child abuse material at out-of-school centres in Sydney.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to 11 charges related to offending that occurred at six locations as far back as 2018.

James will be eligible for parole in October 2031 after counting time already served.

Leaders in regional WA say their town was built on multiculturalism.

It comes after One Nation leader Pauline Hanson suggested Australia should have a monoculture in her address to the National Press Club last week.

Senator Hanson has been invited to discuss the issue with Katanning Imam Alep Mydie.

When Imam Alep Mydie heard One Nation leader Pauline Hanson's call to establish a monocultural Australia, he was more confused than concerned.

"Even in the place I call home, which is Katanning, I have been here for the past 56 years, multiculturalism has existed before I arrived here," he said.

A football club in Melbourne’s northern suburbs withdrew its support for a Pride celebration, leaving the club divided and the senior women’s team to hold its own unsanctioned event.

Coburg Districts Football Club, in the Essendon District Football League, refused to endorse the Pride game despite granting the women’s team permission for the celebration at the start of the season, according to three sources not prepared to be named because of the sensitive nature of the issue.

According to the sources, the reason given to the women’s team changed multiple times, before the club eventually told them that the Pride event on June 13 clashed with the official unveiling of the club’s redeveloped facilities at Cole Reserve Oval in Pascoe Vale.

I’m sceptical of remakes, but this new version of Cape Fear is incredible – and terrifying

I’m always sceptical of a TV series that stretches out a film-length story to 10 episodes, but this new adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners – which was first made into a 1962 film starring Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, and again in 1991 starring Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro – is a slick, clever update of the original.

With Martin Scorsese (who directed the 1991 film) and Steven Spielberg as executive directors, it’s no surprise this is a big-budget affair, and it looks incredible.

Once again set in Georgia, there are two attorneys who now are the target of the newly released con Max Cady. Anna Bowden (Amy Adams, most recently seen in Nightbitch) and her husband Tom (Fargo’s Patrick Wilson) were Cady’s respective defence lawyer and prosecutor. They met during Cady’s trial 17 years earlier for the murder of his wife and unborn child. (The icky rapist themes of the ’91 version have been changed.)

Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck starred in the first, in 1962 â the former as the villain Max Cady, nursing an incandescent rage and obsessive desire for vengeance against the latter, as lawyer Sam Bowden, for for his role as key witness in a rape prosecution. Martin Scorsese directed a remake that had Nick Nolte as Bowden and a truly terrifying Robert De Niro as Cady in 1991. It introduced a few more moral grey areas but the battle remained between good and very, very evil as Cady sought to destroy Bowdenâs life and family in every conceivable way.

The Boroughs review – this witty, star-packed monster show could have been made by Spielberg

A retirement village Scooby gang of heroes take on a horrific creature in a series that is funny, tender, wise â and executive produced by the Duffer Brothers

Iâm sure this isnât the intended takeaway from The Boroughs, a supernatural murder-mystery set in a New Mexico retirement community, but I am transfixed by what is on offer to the ageing demographic across the pond. Itâs like watching an episode of The White Lotus and vowing in your next life to come back as an affluent white American, but more realistic. God willing, weâll all get old â and with a bit of careful planning, maybe we could stretch to a berth in one of the villages that a country with the space to house them provides for a reasonable sum?

This week’s picks in include a supernatural series from the creators of Stranger Things, a For All Mankind spin-off, a delightful documentary about comedian Martin Short and a fitting end to a true-crime documentary.
