Live Review: Deftones Turn Sydney Into Their Own Summer

There are legacy bands, and then there are bands who continue to grow. Deftones belong firmly in the second category. Returning to Qudos Bank Arena for the first of two Sydney shows, the Sacramento icons delivered a performance that felt less like a victory lap and more like a band still pushing forward in real time.

Even before doors opened, the scene outside the arena said plenty. A striking number of younger fans lined up early alongside longtime followers, proof that Deftones’ audience is not fading with age,  it is expanding. Few bands from their era continue to pull in a new generation quite like this. Through streaming culture, social media discovery, and the timeless pull of their blend of heaviness and beauty, their music has found fresh ears.

Deftones 2026 Australian Tour Set Times Revealed

With all the buzz around the shows, set times for Deftones' highly anticipated Australian tour have been announced.

Getting ready to see Deftones this weekend and next week? Little organisation is required, as tour promoters Live Nation and the venues hosting their shows have revealed the set times you need to know.

Deftones are in Australia for their first headline tour in nearly a decade. The American nu-metal stars’ forthcoming shows mark their first time Down Under since they served as a top-level act at the 2022 Good Things Festival, appearing on a bill alongside Bring Me The Horizon, NOFX, and more.

Live Review & Gallery: Deftones lead a towering Sydney return with Interpol and Ecca Vandal in support

The walk into Qudos Bank Arena is carried by a clear sense of excitement tonight, the Deftones have returned to Australia after nearly a decade away.

Ecca Vandal opens with a set that refuses to sit still. She moves between punk abrasion, hip-hop cadence and something more fluid without signalling the shifts, her voice snapping one moment and stretching the next. Her set lands with particular force, she’s just played Coachella and there’s a sense that she’s building a world rather than just performing songs, each track adding another layer of colour and volatility.

Interpol follow with something more controlled. Their set leans into that clipped, nocturnal pulse they’ve carried since the early 2000s, guitars interlocking with mechanical clarity while Paul Banks delivers vocals that hover between detachment and urgency.
